With only eight points scored in three races this season, the French team is counting on its new package to climb up in the rankings.

The beginning of the 2023 season is not the one Alpine had hoped for. With a best result of eighth place (Esteban Ocon in Saudi Arabia), the French team is far from its initial ambitions. Outpaced by the three top teams, Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, and by Aston Martin in the first two Grand Prix, the Blues caught a glimpse of hope in Australia when Pierre Gasly fought with Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll for a large part of the race.

To get closer to the top positions, Alpine will arrive in Azerbaijan for the next Grand Prix with a major upgrade. After a new front wing in Jeddah and some minor updates in Melbourne, the cars, which will regain their blue color, will evolve with a significant aerodynamic package update on the streets of Baku.

According to Otmar Szafnauer, the team principal of the French team, the ambition is clearly to get closer to the top three teams. When analyzing the early races, the gap to the front was significant. We need to reduce this gap. But in order to achieve that, we must develop at a faster pace than any other team. This is not an easy task to accomplish.

Technical director Pat Fry explains that future developments must allow us to bridge a gap of almost half a second: « On average, we need to find four to five tenths in qualifying. This won’t enable us to catch up to Red Bull, but at least our other competitors. Additionally, we are constantly learning about our car. For example, we have made mechanical changes on which we continue to learn. »

In addition to Alpine, it can be expected that other teams have taken advantage of the break to develop new parts in order to test them in the Azerbaijani capital.
