Seeing three world champions in the top three positions of a Grand Prix is a rare occurrence in Formula 1. The final result of the 2023 Australian Grand Prix will thus hold a special place in the F1 history book. With a seven-time world champion (Lewis Hamilton) and two two-time champions (Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso), the podium in Melbourne celebrated a total of 11 titles. A record in the history of the sport.

To see three world champions climbing onto the podium again, you have to go back to the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2018. In Budapest, Lewis Hamilton emerged victorious ahead of the two Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen. That season, the three men also shared the podium in Melbourne and Silverstone.

Better, the 2023 Australian Grand Prix is only the second in history to see three multiple world champions finish in the top three positions. The first time was at the United States Grand Prix held in Phoenix in 1991. Ayrton Senna, then a double champion, had surpassed Alain Prost in his McLaren-Honda, who was a three-time champion at the time, and Nelson Piquet in his Benetton-Ford, also a three-time champion. That makes a total of 8 titles on the podium.

Finally, behind Australia 2023, the most successful podiums are those of the European Grand Prix in 2012 and Turkey 2020, with 10 titles each. In Valencia in 2012, Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari, with its two titles, emerged victorious ahead of Kimi Räikkönen’s Lotus-Renault, the 2007 champion, and Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes, the seven-time world champion. In Istanbul, Lewis Hamilton became world champion for the seventh time by winning the race ahead of Sergio Pérez’s Racing Point and the four-time champion Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari. As the official crowning as champion of the world is only done at the end of the year during the trophy ceremony, Hamilton was still considered a six-time champion at that time.
