Pierre Gasly’s good rhythm spoiled by his mistake during the second restart
The French driver saw his race ruined by his collision with his teammate in the midst of chaos during the second standing start at the Australian Grand Prix.

Finished 9th in the Australian Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly was showing a very good race pace until his collision with Esteban Ocon ruined everything. He managed to hold on for the majority of the race, and managed to keep up with his rivals in the hopes of, with a bit of luck, securing a place on the podium, or at least in the top 4. The former AlphaTauri driver had notably made a pit stop during the red flag caused by Alex Albon on the 7th lap, to switch to the hard tires and go until the end of the race.
Unfortunately, the sprint of the last two laps saw all his hopes vanish when he locked his wheels, going off at turn 1 and colliding with his teammate upon rejoining the track. An unfortunate accident for which Esteban Ocon doesn’t really hold him responsible.
I am very disappointed with the result of today’s race. We were in fifth position for most of the race, chasing Carlos [Sainz] for fourth place, and we showed a very good race pace, comments the Rouen native.
« The fact that we were so close to scoring ten points and leaving empty-handed is bitter for us. For now, we need to focus on the positive points and that’s how we managed our race and were », he continues. « I’m glad that Esteban and I were fine after the incident. As a team, we will move forward and stay focused on the next race. »
The brand new Alpine driver will have plenty of time to learn from his mistake before the next Grand Prix in Baku on April 30th.
