After the invasion of fans on the track during the Australian Grand Prix, the promoter is implicated and has to be accountable to the FIA.

In addition to the debacle on the track, Sunday’s race was also problematic regarding the safety of the spectators, as well as the drivers and race officials. While the race was still ongoing, some supporters managed to breach the security lines and enter onto the track. Some of them even reached Nico Hülkenberg’s car, which was parked at the exit of turn two, with its red flashing light still on, indicating that the vehicle was in a dangerous state due to a potential risk of electrical discharge.

The investigation conducted by the race commissioners, following a report from the FIA sporting delegate and the race director, after examining the video evidence and summoning the Grand Prix promoter, proves that the safety measures indicated by the protocol were not respected, thus violating Article 12.2.1.h of the FIA International Sporting Code. [Note: “Any dangerous act or failure to take reasonable measures resulting in a dangerous situation.”]

The organizers admit a failure

The representatives of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, promoter of the Grand Prix, immediately acknowledged the FIA’s report and admit an unacceptable situation. As a result, they are launching a thorough investigation into the situation and will have to submit a new plan to the authority, now complying with all safety regulations.

They have already proposed several solutions to prevent this kind of event from happening again.

We therefore propose the following corrective measures to ensure that there will be no further transgressions:

a. A thorough examination of the early track violation and protection of Hülkenberg’s car by the officials will be conducted.

b. A comprehensive examination of the plan will be carried out.

c. The results and conclusions of these examinations, as well as the detailed recommendations, will be documented and provided to the FIA through the ASN for comments and approval, if applicable.

d. The aforementioned exams will include consultation with Victoria Police, Formula 1, the FIA, and the aforementioned stakeholders, » announces the statement released by the FIA.

The promoter requested to be given until June 30th, 2023 to complete the above. As for the sports commissioners, they formally refer this incident to the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council for a more thorough investigation in order to determine if additional measures or sanctions beyond the remediation plan presented by the promoter are necessary.
