For his first Grand Prix in his new team, Pierre Gasly experienced a race that was very different from his compatriot, Esteban Ocon. After setting the 17th fastest time in qualifying, he was relegated to the 20th position on the grid for exceeding the track limits.

Nevertheless, after this disappointing Saturday, he managed to react and had a very impressive race. He was the first to pit for hard tires, then took advantage of Charles Leclerc’s misfortune and the “virtual safety car” deployed due to his retirement to finish ninth, ahead of Alexander Albon. He set the fastest lap multiple times but was denied the extra point by Zhou Guanyu at the very end of the race.

(I’m) I’m happy. It was really a good race, we did the best we could. We were aggressive, we tried to use the car’s performance by positioning ourselves differently from the others and we managed to climb up. I had a clean race, I gave it my all in the end to try to catch Bottas. We know what we need to work on. Yesterday (Saturday), we messed up, I messed up. We know that if we start further ahead, we can go for bigger points.

We know the things we need to work on, after that, there was only one race, the top 3 hasn’t changed. Aston Martin has taken a big step forward, but there’s no need to panic. We just need to focus and develop the car throughout the season. Alpine managed to do it last season, there’s no reason why the team won’t do it this year. I have confidence. We have a good foundation to work with, and it’s nice to start this season with points,” he said on Canal+.
