Airspeeder presents the MK4, the future flying Formula 1 racing car that will compete in 2024
Airspeeder is a series in development that aims to pit drivers controlling electric quadcopters, with dimensions similar to an F1 car or a Formula E car, against each other in the air. Fins appear in this new version.

The company Alauda Aeronautics presented at the end of February, in London, a new version of its aerial vehicle, the Airspeeder Mk4, specially designed for a new sport discipline. Since Star Wars, humanity has been dreaming of driving fast-moving land vehicles at dizzying speeds, but podracing on the rings of Saturn is still in the realm of science fiction. However, Alauda Aeronautics is trying to make this dream a reality by offering a very real glimpse of the race of the future.
The CEO of the company, Matt Pearson, said during the press conference:
- « We, and the rest of the world, are ready for the inhabited flying car race. We have built the vehicles, developed the sport, secured the venues, attracted sponsors and technical partners. The time has come for the most progressive, innovative, and ambitious brands, suppliers, and automotive teams in the world to participate in a truly revolutionary new motorsport. »
The trials have so far been conducted on very simple and horizontal tracks, but Air races could offer a whole new level of spectacle provided that driver safety is ensured, which will not be easy given the already risky nature of the discipline on the ground…
The Airspeeder Mk4 is an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle that can reach a speed of 360 km/h in just 30 seconds from a standing start. This propeller-driven vehicle is powered by a Thunderstrike hydrogen turbo-generator, providing a maximum range of 300 kilometers. A unique feature of this vehicle is the 3D-printed combustion chamber, which is typically used for rocket engines. The speedster takes inspiration from both drones for propulsion and Formula 1 for aerodynamics. The central cockpit allows a driver to take control and experience the acceleration and sensations of Formula 1, but without wheels and in complete levitation.
With its latest model, Airspeeder Mk4 promises improved safety for the pilot, as the propeller blades are now protected, unlike the previous model. Furthermore, it is equipped with fins and a less curved design, giving this model a characteristic F1 appearance. Designed to compete in a newly created competition, the EXA Series is supported by former driver Bruno Senna, ambassador of the competition which is set to debut in 2024 in southern Australia.
For now, the series is being developed with its own rules and is not connected to the International Automobile Federation like Formula 1 is.
