The weight of cars will finally not be reduced in 2023

If the FIA had announced a reduction in the weight of Formula 1 cars in 2023, it will finally not be the case due to Pirelli tires.

The 2022 single-seaters were the heaviest in history. For 2023, the FIA had planned to reduce the weight to 796 kg. But there was a twist, Pirelli indicated that the 2023 tires were 1.5 kg heavier compared to those of last year. The Italian supplier effectively modified the construction of the front tires to correct the understeer tendency.

The procedure whereby the minimum weight of cars must be adjusted according to the mass of the tires has therefore been respected, adjusting the weight of the cars to 798 kg, the same as last year.

The teams were informed of this change in recent days during the last meeting of the F1 technical committee. Nevertheless, the teams had already prepared themselves for a reduction in the weight limit, so we can imagine that progress has been made and that, without the tires, the cars will be lighter than in 2022.
