Andreas Seidl replaces Frédéric Vasseur at Alfa Romeo F1
It's now official. Andreas Seidl, McLaren F1 Team Principal since 2019, will replace Frédéric Vasseur as head of the Sauber Group from the 2023 season.
The announcements continue one after another this week in the Formula 1 team bosses market. After the announcement of Mattia Binotto’s resignation as head of Ferrari, a real game of musical chairs has been taking place in the last few hours.
Frédéric Vasseur, until now the director of Alfa Romeo F1, has been confirmed as the future director of Scuderia Ferrari. However, his successor in Hinwill still needed to be known.
It is now done as the Swiss team managed to recruit Andreas Seidl from McLaren. This is excellent news for Sauber as they will be able to benefit from the connections between the German leader and the Volkswagen group. As a reminder, the partnership between Sauber and Alfa Romeo will end in late 2023. Starting from 2026, it is with Audi that the team founded by Peter Sauber will continue its F1 adventure.
Audi undoubtedly hired Seidl to prepare for its arrival in Formula 1. As the head of the Porsche endurance program from 2014 to 2017, the German played a crucial role in the successes of the 919 Hybrid at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015, 2016, and 2017. His arrival in Hinwill is therefore not a big surprise, especially since he had already been involved with Sauber while working at BMW Motorsport when the Swiss team belonged to the Munich brand.
“It’s great to be joining Sauber from January. It’s a team with a rich history in Formula 1 and a company that I know well, having worked there for four years. I can’t wait to join the team and work with all the members of the Sauber Group on the ambitious goals we have set for ourselves,” said Seidl in Sauber’s statement.
Andreas Seidl joins the Sauber Group as Chief Executive Officer, starting in Jan 2023.
He will be tasked with continuing the growth of the group as Sauber keeps establishing itself as one of the brightest sporting, industrial entities around.

McLaren also announced the replacement for Seidl at the helm of the team. It will be the right-hand man, Andrea Stella, who will take charge of McLaren from today.
