Mercedes is already renewing its contract with Petronas in preparation for the new regulations in 2026

Mercedes has announced a multi-year contract renewal with sponsor Petronas starting from 2026.

The partner is one of the main actors in the team’s recent success. It provides the fuel, oil, and lubricant for the power units of Mercedes and the teams supplied by Mercedes such as Williams and McLaren.

An announcement regarding the renewal of a contract that will take place in 2026 may seem surprising, but Mercedes is thinking ahead in preparation for the new engine regulations to be implemented at that time. The regulations will push teams to use sustainable fuel. Team principal Toto Wolff has spoken out about this early extension.

From 2026, sustainable fuel will be at the heart of F1 performance, and this gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase our expertise in this field.

Petronas has big plans for Formula 1 but also for all other vehicles. With the creation of a bio-refinery and the development of sustainable fuel for road vehicles, the company hopes to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The bio-refinery will allow the production of hydrogenated vegetable oil for everything that runs on gasoline. They are also working on the aviation sector and hope to reduce the carbon footprint by 50% in the field through more sustainable fuel.

The Chief Executive Officer of Petronas, Datuk Sazali Hamzah, believes that they can produce and supply 100% sustainable fuel within a few years: « Petronas already has the capacity and expertise to produce and supply 100% sustainable fuel for the next generation of powertrains. »
