The Swiss team Sauber, partner in Formula 1 with Alfa Romeo, has reached the highest level of the FIA’s environmental accreditation program. This program aims to help stakeholders in motorsport measure and improve their environmental performance. By introducing clear and consistent environmental management in motorsport, it provides stakeholders with a three-level framework for accrediting their activities, explains the FIA.

This distinction adds to the ISO 14001 certification for all Formula 1 activities, obtained in January 2022. It testifies to the team’s firm commitment to employ the best environmental management practices, in accordance with its own sustainability goals, states Sauber in a statement.

Among its sustainable initiatives, the team highlights the provision of its headquarters in Hinwil (Zurich) with on-site renewable energy, the offsetting of CO2 emissions produced by the team through reforestation and forest protection projects, and the renewal of the company’s vehicle fleet for a more environmentally friendly fleet.

Objective zero net emissions by 2030

Sauber, which has been carbon neutral since 2011, also aims to reduce its total carbon footprint by December 2023. It hopes to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, in line with the broader objectives of Formula 1.

Alessandro Alunni Bravi, CEO of the Sauber Group, takes pride in this achievement: (e) For over ten years now, our company has been striving to be completely carbon neutral and implementing a growing range of initiatives as part of our sustainability program. I am proud of this accomplishment and how it reflects our total commitment to our planet and its inhabitants.

For Almira Tabakovic, the sustainable development specialist of the Sauber group, this recognition from the FIA is not an end in itself. On the contrary, it represents a starting point for our company to achieve even more significant results, she said.

These three stars were awarded to Sauber Motorsport following an audit conducted by the FIA’s environmental accreditation auditor last August. As a reminder, the partnership between Alfa Romeo and the Swiss team will end at the end of 2023, leaving open the possibility of a collaboration between Sauber and the engine supplier Audi, upon its announced arrival in 2026.
