The Jarama circuit in Madrid is requesting to be included in the F1 calendar

As the calendar for 2023 has been released and agreements with some Grand Prix events have led to contract extensions, other circuits would like to host the championship. This is the case for Jarama, which has sent a letter to the FIA regarding a Grand Prix on their circuit.

With the soaring popularity of Formula 1, former circuits would like to make a comeback on the championship calendar. This is the case with Jarama, near Madrid, which has already hosted nine Grand Prix between 1968 and 1981.

The circuit is located in Spain on the outskirts of Madrid. It has a length of 3.850 km and features 11 turns.

Since 1991, the Spanish Grand Prix has taken place in Barcelona. As holders of a contract with Formula 1 until 2026, it will be very complicated for Jarama to replace the Spanish Grand Prix as Barcelona is an institution for F1. However, the circuit wishes to see F1 drivers racing on its track again and therefore did not hesitate to send a letter of intent to the federation.

The architect Jarno Zaffelli, who specializes in the renovation of F1 circuits, believes that it would be possible to see them hosting the championship very soon.

Technically, for Jarama to be able to host Formula 1, it’s possible and not as expensive as creating a new circuit, that’s for sure.

Gilles Villeneuve is the last F1 driver to have won a Formula 1 race on the Madrid circuit. In the past, other great names in F1 have also won there, such as Graham Hill in 1968, Jackie Stewart in 1970, Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972, Niki Lauda in 1974, James Hunt in 1976, Mario Andretti in 1977 and 1978, and finally Patrick Depailler.
