Mercedes has launched a sustainable and social development program within their Formula 1 team. The numerous challenges related to ecology and social issues in sports have motivated them to propose actions that they are committed to implementing in the years to come.

The main focus of this program will be the environment, social equity, and charity. These are the current challenges regarding global situations today.

For the environmental aspect, after reducing CO2 emissions by 50% – a goal already planned since 2018, Mercedes would like to aim further. Through its actions, the team would like to become the least polluting sports team in the world. They would like to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, meaning they want to get as close as possible to zero emissions. Some measures will be implemented. Mercedes would like to base their emissions on industry standards and greenhouse gas protocols.

On the social side, Mercedes hopes to diversify the employees within their team. They aim to welcome more individuals from minority backgrounds. This initiative has been pushed and supported by driver Lewis Hamilton, who is highly committed to equality both in the world and within his own team. Mercedes has already started this revolution by increasing the percentage of employees from minority backgrounds in their team in recent years. The presence of women in the team has gone from 12% to 15% of employees. Overall, 38% of minority individuals have joined in strengthening the brand.

Students at Mercedes

In addition to jobs, Mercedes would like to include talented students who would like to work in the field after their training. A partnership with schools and associations has already been established to give young people the opportunity.

Mercedes also wants to benefit the underprivileged and participates in donations for associations. The development of their support for businesses and local communities is crucial to them. In addition, $75,000 has been donated to their own association dedicated to Alzheimer’s research. This amount is expected to reach $100,000 by December 2022.

Mercedes wants to change mentalities.

Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has spoken about the program that has been implemented.

The car racing is fueled by passion. We operate in the fastest and most dynamic sport in the world and we have the responsibility to use this global platform to be more than just leaders; we want to be pioneers. Over the past few years, we have worked tirelessly to change and better understand the impact we have on the world. We are fully committed to achieving high and sustainable performance. This is the future for all of us.

Whether it’s by deploying our resources to foster technological advancements that will help society tackle the environmental challenges we face, or by committing to increasing the diversity of our workforce and supporting those in need within our local communities, our passion is not only in the cars you see on the track, it is engrained in everything we do.

We form a team of people who solve problems, and we set ambitious goals to become more sustainable in everything we do. We are at the beginning of this journey, but we are committed to achieving extremely challenging objectives because we are all in the race towards a sustainable future.

Mercedes takes into account every issue of today’s society in order to evolve and change mindsets.
