De Vries should pursue a dual program in WEC and Formula E in 2023

The future of Nyck de Vries continues to be written away from Formula 1. The Dutch driver is expected to stay in Formula E next year. While his team Mercedes is becoming McLaren, the reigning champion would likely leave the ship. According to information from “The Race,” De Vries is set to join the new Maserati team, which will replace Venturi in 2023.

Formula 2 champion in 2019, the Dutchman turned to Formula E in 2020 due to a lack of opportunities in Formula 1. Mercedes’ protege has continued to build an impressive record by winning the title last year. Next season at Maserati, he is expected to be partnered with Edoardo Mortara, the runner-up in 2021 behind De Vries.

In addition to his commitment in Formula 2, the 27-year-old Dutchman has been a reserve driver for Toyota in Endurance since 2020. The Japanese firm is considering making him a permanent driver in 2023. The only hindrance to the conclusion of this dual program would be Maserati’s wait for the certainty that no Endurance event will coincide with a Formula E weekend, in order to avoid the absence of the Dutchman.

Despite his participation in free practice sessions with Williams in Formula 1 this season, De Vries seems to have been overshadowed by Oscar Piastri to secure Nicholas Latifi’s seat next year. At 27 years old, time is now running out if the 2019 F2 champion wants to make his Formula 1 debut.
