Alonso could still contend for the title if he was in a top team, according to Berger
Former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger believes that Fernando Alonso would still have the ability to challenge for the title this season if he were in a Ferrari or a Red Bull.

By leaving Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season, after four difficult years with McLaren, no one thought we would see Fernando Alonso again at an advanced age behind the wheel of the premier category. But the Spanish driver chose to make a comeback last year with Alpine and continues to prove that he is not like any other driver, even at 40 years old.
“For former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger, the Bull from Asturias has not lost any of his driving skills. Yes, I’m 100% sure,” declares the 62-year-old Austrian when asked if Alonso would be capable of winning a third championship behind the wheel of a Red Bull or Ferrari this season.”
Berger goes even further by claiming that the two-time world champion, in 2005 and 2006 behind the wheel of Renault, could have achieved more titles in his career. « I must say, with his talent, Alonso could have won five world championships for me. After McLaren, he closed the doors because if he had been with Mercedes, he would have had five titles. »
After a start of the season filled with bad luck, as evidenced by his mere two points scored after five races, Fernando Alonso continues to showcase his talent in the past few Grand Prix, such as his splendid second place during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.
With these performances, it’s hard to see how Alpine wouldn’t renew his contract for 2023. He forms an excellent duo with the consistently remarkable Esteban Ocon. While there was a dilemma between the Spanish driver and the young Oscar Piastri, it seems that the Australian is ultimately heading towards Williams for 2023, which means Fernando Alonso will still have at least one more season with the French team.
