Domenicali mentions a possible F1 Grand Prix in Nice
Interviewed by L'Équipe about the future of the French Grand Prix, F1 boss Stefano Domenicali mentions a surprising new possibility: A circuit project in the city of Nice is being considered.

The Formula 1 calendar is a major topic at the moment. Some European Grand Prix races are not guaranteed to see the premier category return to their circuit. Among them is obviously the Paul Ricard circuit. While the latest news seems to indicate progress in the negotiations, nothing is confirmed yet.
Asked about the future of the French Grand Prix by L’Équipe, Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali once again provided some indications. And one of his answers is quite surprising: according to him, there is a project being studied to host Formula 1 in the streets of the city of Nice.
(Historically, France is an important nation in auto racing. You may not be aware, but there is an incredible project with Nice, which wants to host a Grand Prix,” says Domenicali to Frédéric Ferret for L’Équipe. This idea may have emerged during the exchange that Domenicali had with Christian Estrosi, the mayor of the city of Nice, during the Monaco Grand Prix. Christian Estrosi, director of the GIP French Grand Prix, responded this morning to this information.)
(D) Lately, Nice has definitely been at the center of all interests as a destination for organizing the most prestigious sporting events. One day, we hear about the arrival of the Tour de France, another day about hosting the Formula 1 French Grand Prix… On this weekend when we are hosting the two semi-finals of the Top 14, it’s pleasant to be envied rather than pitied. It’s a great encouragement for the local economy and the dynamism of our retailers, restaurateurs, and hoteliers. (F) he explains to our colleagues at Var Matin without confirming or denying the information.
Beyond the emergence of such a project, the boss of Formula 1 also reveals another concrete and crucial information for the French Grand Prix: the decision date for its future. « We will look into the files and study them carefully. There are other things that may happen very soon. All I can tell you is that by the end of July, you will know more about the future of your Grand Prix. »
The issue of the future of certain circuits also lies in the number of races per season. And on this point, Domenicali is clear, having 30 Grand Prix next year is not feasible. « The calendar for next year is being prepared. Having 30 GPs would not be reasonable. Our preferred option would be to stay at 23 or 24 races. And to achieve that, considering the demands, we are going to work on the principle of rotation. Not only for Europe but also for other countries. I just came back from South Africa but we are a World Championship and Africa doesn’t have a place for now. That needs to change. Discussions are progressing and I think we will have an answer soon. »
So, make an appointment before the end of July to find out the decision of Formula 1.
