Latifi wanted to assist Gasly by ignoring the blue flags
Penalized for ignoring blue flags, Nicholas Latifi indicated that he had acted in this way in order to help Pierre Gasly defend himself against Lewis Hamilton.

Finishing last in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this Sunday, Nicholas Latifi drew more attention for his penalties than for his on-track actions. Firstly, he was penalized with a ten-second Stop and Go penalty because a mechanic touched his car after the allowed period. Later in the race, he received a second sanction.
Lap 42, Nicholas Latifi is in last position. Behind him, Pierre Gasly and Lewis Hamilton, who are fighting for fourth place, are closing in on his Williams. Blue flags are shown to the Canadian, who does not let the Normandy’s AlphaTauri pass. The stewards review the incident and give him a five-second penalty and deduct one point from his license.
After the race, Latifi spoke about the received penalty. The penalty for blue flags, I understood that I took more time to let him pass. But I spoke to Pierre later, I told him what I wanted to do and he agreed with what I did.
The Canadian explains why he did not respect the twelve blue flags that were shown to him throughout the race. I simply wanted to give him the DRS, because if I let him pass a few corners earlier, he wouldn’t have had the DRS and he would have been penalized compared to Hamilton, who was catching up to him in the dirty air ahead. So I said to myself, “Okay, at least let me give him the DRS,” and he agreed. He said, “Yes, you did what you had to do.” But well, the stewards didn’t understand it.
Nicholas Latifi had a difficult and anonymous race. Despite no major mistakes throughout the weekend on a track that easily allows for it, the Canadian simply did not have the pace.
