The only rookie on the grid this season, Guanyu Zhou is also the first Chinese driver to be a regular in Formula 1 history. After finishing tenth in the opening Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain, the Alfa Romeo driver continues his learning alongside his experienced teammate Valtteri Bottas.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS, Zhou revealed the name of the driver he considers to be his role model since childhood. When asked about the identity of his childhood idol, the 23-year-old driver didn’t hesitate for long. It’s Fernando Alonso! In China, many fans supported Michael Schumacher and Ferrari. But I admired Alonso’s driving style.
During his time at the Renault Driver Academy, Zhou had the chance to rub shoulders with the Spanish driver. It was a somewhat surreal experience for him, suddenly finding himself face to face with his idol. It was a truly special moment for me. It was hard to imagine meeting Alonso or driving his car.
