Red Bull explains Pérez’s evolution this season
With already four podiums, including a victory in Monaco two weeks ago, Sergio Pérez is impressing Red Bull this season. Red Bull simply explains the evolution of the Mexican driver between 2021 and 2022.

Last season was Sergio Pérez’s first in a top team. Joining Red Bull when he wasn’t even sure if he would remain in Formula 1 after 2020, the Mexican driver had a successful first year without being outstanding. But in 2022, Pérez is simply remarkable. In seven races, he already has four podium finishes and, above all, a victory on the most prestigious circuit of the premier category.
Red Bull has already expressed several times its satisfaction with Sergio Pérez’s performances at the start of the season. Paul Monaghan, chief engineer within the Austrian team, reiterates these compliments. Checo is driving extremely well this year, and he feels that the car is not always to his liking, but he can still handle it.
The gap between Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez has considerably narrowed this season. In certain races or qualifying sessions, the Mexican driver was even faster than the Dutchman. Monaghan explains it simply. « I think that the car from last year, let’s not forget that we were at the end of a regulation that has evolved, and we evolved with Max. And then Checo arrived and, as Max’s teammate, we couldn’t have asked for anything better, right? »
Pérez is showing that he can compete with Verstappen in some races, at least for now. For Monaghan, the RB18 is much more suitable for the Mexican than it was last season. « I wouldn’t say it’s particularly a complicated car, and I wouldn’t say it’s an easy car either. And for now, Checo is doing very well with it and liking it. I don’t know if one is more comfortable than the other. I think Max is driving as well as I’ve always seen him. We will see what happens towards the end of the year. »

Horner wants to let Pérez fight for the title against Verstappen. Christian Horner recently expressed the possibility of allowing Sergio Pérez to compete for the championship towards the end of the season if he is still able to do so.
