After a season start dominated by George Russell internally, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes that Lewis Hamilton should regain the upper hand without the elements of bad luck.

In this early season of 2022, some drivers are impressing more than others. At the top of this list, we can definitely place George Russell. The 24-year-old Brit has achieved seven top 5 finishes in as many races and has accumulated 84 points. This is even more remarkable when considering Lewis Hamilton’s performance, who is struggling more with the W13 and has only 50 points, 34 fewer than his new teammate.

A driver ranking that does not reflect the true performance of his two drivers for Toto Wolff, who believes that George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are more or less at the same pace. Despite the gap that may seem quite large between the seven-time world champion and the former Williams driver, Wolff believes that it is partly due to bad luck that is responsible for Hamilton’s difficult start to the season, including once again in Monaco.

« I think that when you look at the bad luck Lewis has had. I mean, look at today’s race [Sunday], blocked again, contact with Esteban [Ocon], stuck behind Fernando [Alonso]. The red flag yesterday in qualifying, and you know what happened in previous races,” declares Wolff, who also believes that when this bad luck leaves Hamilton, he will turn the situation around.
« I think the balance will shift when these unlucky situations stop happening to Lewis.

He could have been right there, close to the pit window with Lando [Norris], or even fighting with George and Lando up front because that was his pace. They’re nearly on the same pace, one session one leads, then the other, and it’s also great how they work together to improve our car, because we need a better car.

The rest of the season will be interesting from Brackley’s perspective, we will have to see if the future proves Toto Wolff right or not. The evolution of the performance of the W13 could tip the scales, with Russell being more inclined to perform well with a challenging car to drive than Hamilton.
