Alonso is not in a hurry to return to the Indianapolis 500

A new participation by Fernando Alonso in the legendary American race would not happen before several years.

Two-time winner of the Monaco F1 Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Fernando Alonso can legitimately aspire to win the Triple Crown. To hold this honorary title, it is sufficient to win at least one victory in the three most prestigious events in world motorsport:

– le Grand Prix de Monaco F1

– les 24 Heures du Mans

– les 500 Miles d’Indianapolis.

To this day, only the double Formula 1 World Champion Graham Hill has managed to achieve this feat. The British driver won the Monaco race five times, completed the Le Mans double hour hand once, and also won the 500 Miles once. His distant successor in the F1 record books, Fernando Alonso, would like to emulate him.

The Spanish driver has had three attempts at the Brickyard in Indiana. In 2017, while he was part of the leading group, his Honda engine failed towards the end of the race. In 2019, the Alpine F1 driver faced a big disappointment as he failed to qualify for the race. Finally, in 2020, he crossed the finish line in 21st place.

Today, the native of Oviedo has other priorities. Alonso feels good in the premier category after two years of absence and has no intention of leaving the circuits of the world championship again: “I will see when the right time to leave will be. For now, I am fully focused on Formula 1,” he said to the website Speedweek.

Even though the two-time world champion with Renault does not rule out a new attempt in Indiana, he doesn’t consider himself concerned about it at this stage: “I see myself driving in Formula 1 for a few more years.” The question remains which team the Spaniard would continue his career with.
