For every driver, the home Grand Prix is inevitably special and is among the very first races where performing well is a priority. This weekend in Spain, it was the case for two drivers who absolutely had to show a good performance after a difficult start to the season: Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso.

Just before the start, the Alpine driver couldn’t hope for much. Eliminated in Q1 on Saturday in 17th position, his team made the decision to change his engine, and Alonso ultimately started in 20th and last position.

But after a perfectly executed race with a magnificent comeback, Alonso managed to score two valuable points in ninth place. These points are almost like an achievement considering how tight the midfield is. “I am very happy,” declared the Bull from Asturias after the race.

A result that was obviously not expected by neither his team nor Alonso himself. Obviously, finishing in the points is always the target every weekend and for us, after the bad qualifying and the decision to change the engine overnight, it felt like sacrificing this weekend [because we knew] it would be very difficult to get points. Now that we have this ninth place, we almost feel it as a victory, and it feels good. I hope that here we can maybe start five, eight, ten consecutive races in the points, which is what we need.

A result obviously very good when considering the qualification, but still frustrating considering the performance of the A522. « I really liked it, of course, but we still have another weekend where we finished the race feeling like we could have finished two or three positions higher than what we achieved. Whether the qualifications were good or the start was good or the pit stop was good, there’s always something in your head. So I’m looking forward to a weekend where we will maximize everything. »

With his crazy comeback, the Spaniard earns two additional points (4), but still remains in fourteenth place in the drivers’ standings, far behind his teammate and his thirty points.
