Since the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which concluded the 2021 season in a tumultuous manner, the FIA has made several decisions to avoid a similar psychodrama from happening again. The institution at Place de la Concorde first opened an investigation to analyze the decisions that were made towards the end of the race, and then modified the composition of the Race Direction operating on the circuits of the world championship.

Michael Masi, who was in office on the evening of Max Verstappen’s victory, has thus been replaced by two new race directors, Portuguese Eduardo Freitas and German Niels Wittich. But Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the new president of the FIA, wants to go further. Jean Todt’s successor wishes to have three race directors starting from the 2023 season. The FIA is working hard to improve the organization of Formula 1. There are many changes to be made and we need more people.

According to the Saudi leader, this third person could be… Michael Masi! Ben Sulayem did not present the Australian as a candidate for the position but did not exclude him either. « I did not get rid of Masi. It’s not like we said it was the end of Masi at the FIA. I don’t do that kind of thing. He made a human error and the World Council decided to sideline him ».

Ben Sulayem acknowledged having discussed last week with the person who succeeded Charlie Whiting, while adding: “I have no personal issue with him. I don’t hate anyone. Michael is here and we could use him. He might be well placed to be used. We are open to everything.”

Finally, according to several British sources, Masi himself would be interested in a return to Formula 1 as a race director.
