From being the worst car on the grid last season (by far) to showing great promise in the midfield in the early stages of the 2022 season, Haas seems to be struggling again after just five races. With only two small points scored in the last three races, including Kevin Magnussen’s 9th place finish in Imola, even Williams and Aston Martin are performing better with three and six points respectively during the same period.

In Miami, starting 15th and 16th, it may seem logical, or at least not surprising, to see the American team not score any points. However, before the intervention of the safety car on the 41st lap after the collision between Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris, both white and red cars were on the verge of scoring points, in 11th and 12th positions, just 4 seconds behind the 9th place. At the moment of the restart, Mick Schumacher is even in P9 after some drivers ahead of him made pit stops. Then, two collisions with the two Aston Martins brought the Haas cars back to their starting position, with Kevin Magnussen even retiring in the very last moments of the race.

Günther Steiner expressed his disappointment after this missed opportunity to score more points. « We were in a bad position [after qualifying]. I think we all regrouped, we were back in a good position and then, with 10 laps remaining, everything went up in smoke. »

« Who wouldn’t be disappointed after a weekend like this? I think we have no one else to blame but ourselves. We were back in the points, it was possible to have both cars in the points, and we lost everything at the restart. It’s very disappointing because I think the guys did a great job. We made some mistakes and we come back with nothing. Well, not with nothing, we come back with broken parts.

»

Steiner also went back on what was possible to do with this car. « It’s positive but you have to use your potential. With a car like this one, it’s wasted opportunities. I am very disappointed with this race. We have to go back to square one and see what we are going to do in Spain and Monte Carlo. We have to do better than that because we have the car for it. »
