In full progress since the 2nd Grand Prix of the season, Lando Norris, and McLaren in general, see their good momentum come to a sudden stop. 7th in Jeddah, 5th in Melbourne, 3rd in Imola, if we follow the logic, Norris could have won the Miami Grand Prix. However, the outcome is ultimately the exact opposite, with a retirement as a result of a collision with Pierre Gasly on the 41st lap.

Hung up by Fernando Alonso, who was penalized 5 seconds for the incident, Pierre Gasly was in great difficulty and was surely about to give up when Lando Norris arrived behind him. Misunderstanding between the two drivers at the exit of turn 8 and it resulted in a double retirement.

Lando Norris expressed all his frustration at the end of the race. « It’s a shame. I think it just ended stupidly. Someone said he was on the radio saying he was going to retire or something like that, so if that’s the case, I think what he did was stupid. If you’re about to retire, you move off the racing line to let the drivers still in the race pass. He was looking straight in his rearview mirror, he crossed the track.

The young British man also reflected on what he could have done better to avoid the collision. Of course, you could maybe say that I could have left a little more space, but I don’t expect him to just try to stay in the middle. Too bad. We could have possibly secured an 8th or 9th place, which would have earned us some points, better than nothing. That would have been nice, but it didn’t end up that way. It’s frustrating, but it’s not the end of the world.

The McLaren driver therefore judges that it is largely Gasly’s fault. « Perhaps some will blame me, some will blame him. I think the main thing is that, if he was still racing and fighting for positions, I would say it’s more of a racing incident, and I could have done a bit more and he could have done a bit more. But I think if he was about to retire, it was just a stupid incident on his part and he could have just moved out of the way a bit more. »
