With the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the BAFTA Awards are among the most coveted prizes in the film and television industry. This year, the Sports category could very well crown a major event of the 2021 F1 season.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021 is indeed among the nominees alongside the Tokyo Olympic Games, the equestrian event The Grand National, and the Euro football semi-final England versus Denmark.

As a reminder, last December, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton had reached a tie in points in the Emirati capital. Despite leading the race from start to finish, the Mercedes driver had to give in to the Dutchman in the last lap, following a series of bewildering decisions made by the race officials, following the accident involving Nicholas Latifi’s Williams car.

This is not the first time that an F1 race is nominated for the BAFTA in this category. The Bahrain Grand Prix 2020, during which Romain Grosjean’s Haas ended up in flames following a dramatic crash, also received this honor.

Furthermore, Formula 1 is also mentioned in another category as the series “Drive To Survive” competes for the trophy of “Best Sound in a Documentary Series”. This award has already been won by the Netflix series last year.

Meet on May 8th to find out the results.
