As they were well on their way to finishing second and fourth in the first Grand Prix of the 2022 season, Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez’s Red Bulls suddenly had to retire from the race right at the end. After a thorough investigation by the Austrian team, the cause of this double retirement is now known.

According to Helmut Marko, the sports advisor of the Red Bull team, who has read the engineers’ report, the problem is related to the fuel system: « To put it simply, a vacuum was created in the fuel supply system, which caused a disruption in the fuel flow to the engine. I think we can solve this problem for Saudi Arabia.

The fuel pump is no longer a component developed by the teams. It is now a standard part supplied by the Italian company Magneti Marelli. Therefore, the problem is not related to the Honda engine that powers the Red Bull. Marko also rejects the theory of a lack of fuel in the tanks: Without giving you the exact figures, I can tell you that there was still enough fuel in both cars.
