Ferrari is requesting more clarity from the FIA regarding the regulations on rearview mirrors

After Mercedes made significant changes to their car during the Bahrain tests, Ferrari asked the FIA to provide a clearer definition of the regulations regarding the rearview mirrors. The mirrors of the W13 had sparked a lot of discussion, just like its side pods.

The Scuderia Ferrari has questioned the FIA regulations regarding the rearview mirrors, targeting specifically those of Mercedes. The team’s director at the prancing horse, Mattia Binotto, has expressed himself on this matter. No one is questioning the legality of the solutions found by Mercedes, but in 2018, we had installed rearview mirrors connected to the halo, a solution that was legal and written in the regulations. However, after two races, a new technical directive from the FIA forced us to remove them because they had a non-accidental aerodynamic influence, recalled the director of the Italian team.

« This is the point on which I insist. The FIA has the authority to clarify things and I am curious to see how this will evolve on this occasion. I am waiting for clarification.

The W13’s side mirrors had made headlines by fitting into Mercedes’ “zero pods” design. Without sidepods, the Silver Arrows appeared in Bahrain with mirrors connected to the halo by a piece that seemed to have an aerodynamic purpose. However, the technical regulations for 2022 state that the side mirrors must not have a primarily aerodynamic function but should be limited to serving the purpose of seeing what is behind.

Mattia Binotto bounced back on this regulation and the role of the International Federation. The FIA has always clearly stated that the support of the mirrors should only have a structural function, and if it involves aerodynamic influence, it should only be incidental. This has always been the principle emphasized by the FIA in the past. There is no reason for it to change now. It remains to be seen whether the FIA will respond to Binotto’s and Ferrari’s request for clarification.
