The FIA allows the rear wing of Mercedes

The rear wing of Mercedes has been a hot topic for several weeks. The verdict is in and indicates that the German team does not need to change it according to AMuS. Red Bull's requests for further tests on the wing have been rejected by the FIA.

As the season approaches its end with the last two Grand Prix, Mercedes will be able to keep its wing for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This wing has fueled many speculations in the paddock, particularly regarding its flexibility on long straights, creating a slight DRS effect.

The FIA has carried out brand new tests that involve placing 35 kilos on the rear wing to see how far it bends. But since these tests are new and serve as an experiment, they are not valid according to the regulations. Even if this test were valid for the 2021 season, the Mercedes team successfully completed this exercise, just like all the F1 teams.

Helmut Marko, the advisor at Red Bull, believes that Mercedes is using false arguments to try to match or surpass the Red Bull car.

« When Mercedes saw that we were equal or even faster, they first proposed flexible wings, then all sorts of other spurious arguments. » declares Helmut Marko to Motorsport.com .

From a legal point of view, anyway, and according to Auto Motor und Sport (AMuS), the rear wing of Mercedes is not illegal following the tests carried out by the FIA.
