The Barcelona circuit on the calendar until 2026

The news was announced by our colleagues at Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday. It is now official as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya signed a contract with F1 on Friday, November 26, linking them until 2026.

This year, the Catalan circuit had undergone modifications, as turn 10 had been entirely redone. Other work is expected to be carried out over the next five years. « Improvements will be made to the track and facilities before the race on May 22, 2022, including upgrades and enhancements in line with the circuit’s ambitious sustainability plans. », says the F1 statement.

« We are delighted to announce this agreement with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. I would like to thank the promoter and the authorities for their enthusiasm and commitment to keeping Formula 1 in Barcelona, said F1 president Stefano Domenicali. The Italian sees this extension as an opportunity for « Spanish fans to continue to see their national heroes, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, up close.

Roger Torrent, the president of the circuit also reacted to this contract extension. « We welcome the renewal of this contract, which includes a mutual commitment clause to help us make the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya a model and global reference of sustainability applied to this type of facilities. We want the circuit to become an exponent of green transformation and adaptation of infrastructure to the requirements of the climate emergency. »
