The new 2022 season is fast approaching, notably with new regulations on cars, while also introducing a completely revamped Grand Prix weekend format. F1’s media owner, Liberty Media, is condensing the current Grand Prix format. Friday’s free practice sessions are grouped in the afternoon, and Thursday’s media day is removed.

To not restrict media coverage of sports, F1’s sporting director, Ross Brawn, is adding a media session on Friday morning. The purpose of this session is to allow teams to explain the various adjustments made to their cars since the last Grand Prix. What was once private is now public starting in 2022, as teams must declare new components to the FIA every weekend. Liberty Media sees no issue with technological developments being made public.

« What we do on Fridays is a broad session for you (the media) to be able to watch the cars and talk to the staff. » Explains Brawn.

« This will create another nuance and another interest for the sport, as the technical side of this sport is quite fascinating for many fans. »

So if this new format allows to discover more about technological achievements. Teams will not be 100% transparent about their technological secrets to avoid providing valuable information to their rivals.
