OFFICIAL: The Qatar Grand Prix in 2021 replaces Australia

It's official, the F1 website has just announced the arrival on the calendar of the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. Located in Doha, this track will host Formula 1 on the weekend of November 21, 2021, replacing the Australian Grand Prix.

The rumor was becoming increasingly insistent in the F1 paddock for some time, Qatar will indeed have its Grand Prix this year. Indeed, the postponement and then the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix, for the second consecutive year, left a prime spot for a Grand Prix in the Middle East.

If the FOM waited until Thursday to announce it, Christian Horner had already let the cat out of the bag the day before to the ServusTV media. When asked about the performance of his single-seaters compared to Mercedes in the remaining Grand Prix races on the calendar, the Red Bull team principal had stated:

They won in Turkey last year, but we were both strong in Austin and we are always stronger at altitude in Mexico and Brazil. As for Qatar and Saudi Arabia, we are not yet sure, and then there is Abu Dhabi. So I would say it’s about 50-50 on the remaining tracks.

If the Losail International Circuit has been used by MotoGP since 2004, it still has a Grade 1 certification, allowing it to host Formula 1 races. The last single-seater race organized on this circuit was the one held in GP2 Asia during the 2009 season, where Sergio Perez emerged victorious. Moreover, the circuit is equipped with lighting similar to that already installed in Bahrain or Abu Dhabi, allowing for night races.

The Qatar Grand Prix will therefore kick off the series of 3 races in the Middle East, followed by Saudi Arabia (December 3-5) and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (December 10-12) to close the 2021 season.
