Sotheby’s, an American multinational of British origin specializing in the auction of art and collectibles, will organize an exceptional auction on September 17 in Saint Moritz. Among many cars, each rarer than the other, a piece of Formula 1 history will turn many heads.
Indeed, a few days after the announcement of the retirement of Finnish driver Kimi Räikkönen, one of the cars he drove will go under the hammer of an auctioneer.
Designed by Adrian Newey, this McLaren MP4-17 D (A-06 in 2002) equipped with a 3.0-liter V10 Mercedes-Benz FO110M engine developed 845 horsepower at nearly 18500 rpm. This MP4-17 was entered seven times during the 2002 season and in 5 races in 2003. Its first appearance was at the European Grand Prix from June 21 to 23, 2002, at the Nürburgring in Germany. Driven by Kimi Räikkönen, this McLaren qualified in 6th place and finished in 3rd place behind Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.
This chassis was also used by David Coulthard during the opening of the 2003 season in Melbourne, the Scotsman will be the first to cross the finish line with this McLaren. This single-seater will finish second three times and third two times. This museum piece will certainly bring joy to its future owner with its famous West McLaren Mercedes livery.
The only downside, according to estimates, is that it will cost between 2 and 2.5 million Swiss francs, or between 1.7 and 2.3 million euros to have it in your garage…
