OFFICIAL: Fernando Alonso extends his contract with Alpine
Alonso will stay in F1 for a second consecutive year. The Spaniard has extended his contract by one year with Alpine.

The adventure continues between Alpine and Fernando Alonso. While doubt was lingering over the Spaniard’s future in F1, he finally extends his contract by one year. This extension comes after the good results of the team at the start of the season. Alonso will be alongside Esteban Ocon for a second consecutive year.
In a press release, Alpine is proud to announce that the two-time Formula 1 world champion will continue under the colors of the French team. In Hungary, Alonso played a crucial role in Ocon’s victory. The team specifies that his experience will be important for the final development and optimization of the chassis and power unit to enter the new era of Formula 1. By extending Alonso’s contract, the team continues its ambitions by balancing experience and youth. With 322 starts, 32 wins, 97 podiums, and two world championships in 2005 and 2006 with Renault, the Spaniard continues his incredible track record in F1.
Laurent Rossi, the CEO of Alpine, admitted his happiness to work with Alonso for another year, highlighting the complementarity of his drivers:
» We are very happy to confirm Fernando Alonso for next season alongside Esteban Ocon. For us, this is a perfect team, among the strongest on the grid. It works extremely complementarily, offering both raw talent and speed, but impeccable teamwork that allowed us to achieve our first victory in Hungary. I am convinced that we can greatly benefit from Fernando’s insight and experience for 2022.
Fernando Alonso is just as happy to continue in F1:
» I am very happy to confirm the contract extension with the Alpine F1 Team until 2022. I felt at home as soon as I came back to this team and I was welcomed with open arms. It’s a pleasure to work again with some of the brightest minds in our sport in Enstone and Viry-Châtillon. The season has been challenging for everyone, but we have made progress as a team and the result in Hungary is a good example of this progress. […] I look forward to the rest of this year and to racing alongside Esteban in 2022 for Alpine.
