Charles Leclerc regrets Lance Stroll’s “unrealistic” choice during the accident
Did Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) was right to try his maneuver at the first corner? An "unrealistic" choice according to Charles Leclerc. This maneuver caused a lot of damage to both cars. Both drivers were forced to retire from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas was not the only one to cause significant damage at the first turn of this Hungarian Grand Prix. In wet conditions, accidents were bound to happen, fortunately without serious consequences. While trying to avoid Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, Lance Stroll crashed violently into the car. The damages were then impossible to repair, and the two drivers quickly retired.
After the race, Stroll explained that he had positioned his car trying to avoid contact. Leclerc disagreed, stating that the Canadian driver’s maneuver was not feasible.
« I know that sometimes small mistakes can have big consequences. However, I think this time it wasn’t really a small mistake. I couldn’t see Lance in my rearview mirrors, and he was five or six positions behind, so it was unrealistic for him to try anything there.
A view shared by his team principal, Mattia Binotto, who is also frustrated by this accident. His driver did everything to avoid the one involving Bottas, Norris, Perez, and Verstappen.
« Charles got off to a good start. He was careful to make sure not to damage the car and was in a good position. The first turn was almost completed, but the accident happened. I think, in a way, it was really a stupid accident. »
The Monegasque understands, however, that this kind of incident can happen. Just like Bottas, Lance Stroll has received a five-place grid penalty for the next race in Belgium.
