Last February, Red Bull announced the creation of a powertrain department named Red Bull Powertrains, following Honda’s withdrawal from F1 at the end of the season. The Austrian team has therefore acquired the intellectual properties of the Japanese manufacturer’s power units and will ensure their production from next year.

However, it has been revealed that Honda will remain responsible for assembling the engines produced by Red Bull in 2022, in a year that Christian Horner has described as a transition year. The Austrian team will therefore become 100% autonomous in terms of power units in 2023.

We are finalizing the details. Obviously, as we prepare at Red Bull Powertrains, 2022 will be a year of transition. So we are working with Honda to have a smooth landing, with engines that will continue to be assembled in Sakura (Honda’s factory in Japan) in 2022 before this process is taken over in our new facilities in time for 2023, said Christian Horner.

Honda F1’s technical director, Toyoharu Tanabe, confirmed the joint project between the Japanese manufacturer and Red Bull and announced that the collaboration is heading in the right direction.

« Yes, Red Bull and Honda are working on this project and on how to lead this transition for next year. I can’t go into details, but overall, we are heading in a good direction and we should be well prepared for next year. We are working really hard, I am working very hard on the trackside.
