The queen of the Nürburgring now has a turn named after her. This Friday, the German circuit announced that they had renamed one of the (many) turns of the Nordschleife in her honor. From now on, the first left-hand corner of the Green Hell is called Sabine Schmitz Corner.

The German, died on March 16th following cancer. Sabine Schmitz had won the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 1996 and 1997, becoming the first woman to win this race. It is estimated that she had completed more than 33,000 laps of the « ring », earning her the nickname of the « Queen of the Ring ».

Sabine Schmitz was the ambassador of the Nurburgring. Her name was mentioned worldwide in the same breath as our racetrack. This always represents what defines the Nürburgring: the close connection to the region, the proximity to the fans, and the passionate commitment, explained Mirco Markfort, the circuit’s general manager.

The leaders of the German circuit have decided to rename this corner, as it is located in Nurburg, the city where the driver grew up.

The choice was made to go with the left turn, located on the outskirts of the town of Nurburg, where Sabine Schmitz grew up just a few meters from the circuit. After leaving the Grand Prix track, this is the first turn on the Nordschleife, according to the circuit’s statement.

The official inauguration of the new corner will take place during the 6-hour race of the Nurburgring Endurance Series on September 11, a championship that Sabine also won in its VLN form in 1998.
