This is a new chapter in McLaren’s long history. This Friday, the British team announced its participation in the Extreme E starting next year. A new commitment that will allow McLaren to accelerate its sustainable development program and reach new fans.

« From the moment Extreme E was announced, we have closely followed its evolution. Our attention was immediately drawn to the innovative format of the series, in particular the ability it gives us to accelerate and energize our sustainable development agenda,” acknowledges Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren.

« At the same time, it will allow us to reach a new audience with an innovative race format, to interact with a new generation of fans through content broadcast on a variety of platforms (…).

Despite the formation of its new team for Extreme E, McLaren will still be involved in Formula 1, Indycar, and e-sports.

« If Formula 1 will always remain at the center of our world, like Indycar and e-sports, our entry into Extreme E will provide the McLaren Racing franchise. This will complement and help support all of our programs. We will be competing against big names that we know well in F1 and INDYCAR, but like all the series in which we are involved, the goal of the competition is clear: we are here to win,” Zak Brown added.

The team’s decision to join the Extreme E adventure was made after taking into account strategic, economic, and operational criteria.

The founder and CEO of Extreme E, Alejandro Agag, is already delighted about the arrival of the McLaren team in his discipline: “We are delighted to welcome Zak (Brown) and his team to Extreme E. And we can’t wait to see how his team will perform for their first electric off-road races. Season 2 is going to be incredible!”

The team will be managed by McLaren Racing, using both people from outside the Formula 1 program and specialized resources. The team also indicates that, like every team, McLaren will provide 4 mechanics and an engineer for each race of the season.

Next year, the team led by Zak Brown is expected to face the teams of two Formula 1 world champions, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
