Starting from 7th position, Yuki Tsunoda could be proud of his qualifying session on Saturday. Indeed, for the first time in his short career, the Japanese driver secured a spot in Q3 with his car.

Losing a position at the start against Fernando Alonso’s Alpine, the AlphaTauri driver decided to stop on the 10th lap to try the undercut as he was unable to gain an advantage on the track. A strategic choice that paid off as the 20-year-old driver saw the Spaniard in his rearview mirrors after the latter’s pit stop.

Taking advantage of the crashes in front of him, the Japanese driver made no mistakes as he might have in previous races this season and held on to his position in the top 10. Although passed by Fernando Alonso during the race restart, Yuki Tsunoda managed to secure the 6 points for his team in 7th place. A strong performance that signals the positive outcome of the Japanese driver’s new training method, as he relocated to Italy so that his team could support him more effectively.

« I am a little frustrated by the final result today, because I think the pace in the car was good this weekend. The race start was good for me and until the red flag I think my performance was really good. Unfortunately, I lost two positions in the final laps, I’m not sure what I could have done differently but I will analyze everything tonight to better understand what happened. 7th still represents important points for the team. I would like to congratulate Pierre for the podium today, the team really deserves it and it’s an excellent result.

On the other hand, the Japanese driver once again offered us a “great” radio moment when he responded very curtly to his engineer. There is no doubt that this point will be part of the debrief that Franz Tost is preparing for him at the Faenza factory…
