Gasly shines in qualifying in Azerbaijan!
Pierre Gasly continues to work miracles with his AlphaTauri. He will start tomorrow's race in fourth position.
After setting the fastest lap during the third free practice session, the Frenchman confirmed his car’s good form by qualifying fourth on the grid. Pierre Gasly thus equals his best qualifying performance on Saturday as he had also started on the second row at Imola in 2020.
Despite several crashes and red flags that made this session complicated, the AlphaTauri driver managed to put together a lap in Q3 which secured him the 4th position. « I think we need to be satisfied with the work we have done. We are fighting with Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari. It shows all the good work we have done to be in fourth position. »
By analyzing the lap of his competitors, the Norman even allowed himself to dream that there was room to do even better: After the third free practice session I was very excited. In the last sector, Charles (Leclerc) had a good slipstream on his lap. Maybe there was a way to look for a slipstream and do better but I think we can be very satisfied with this fourth time.
Currently in the top 10 in the championship, Pierre Gasly could pull off a major coup. Indeed, he starts ahead of some of his rivals like Daniel Ricciardo or Carlos Sainz. It’s also an opportunity to score big points against AlphaTauri’s main opponents like Aston Martin and Alpine. To help him, the Frenchman will be able to rely on his teammate Yuki Tsunoda who, despite his regrettable crash in Q3, will start 8th tomorrow.
