Azerbaijan Grand Prix F2: Qualifying – Liam Lawson sets the fastest time, Théo Pourchaire 4th
Formula 2 accompanies its big sister, Formula 1, on this race weekend in Baku. Liam Lawson sets the best time of the session and will start on pole position for the main race on Sunday.
Hitech Grand Prix signs a good start to the weekend as the team secures a double in qualifying, with Juri Vips setting the second fastest time behind Liam Lawon, ahead of Oscar Piastri and Théo Pourchaire. Liam Lawson surely wanted to make up for his disqualification in the second Sprint race in Monaco, which he had just won.
Hero of the last race, Théo Pourchaire confirms his good form at the moment, he will start 4th in the main race on Sunday morning at the wheel of his ART Grand Prix car. Surely solicited from all sides after his victory in Monaco, the young French driver quickly got back on track to deliver a great qualifying performance, just 4 tenths off the pole position. While the battle is intense on the track, it is also within his team facing a formidable teammate. However, he outperforms Christian Lundgaard who will start from 12th position.
On his part, championship leader Guanyu Zhou delivers a lackluster performance during this qualifying session as he only posts the 8th fastest time at the wheel of his UNI-Virtuosi. Thanks to a reversed grid, the Chinese driver will start from 3rd position in tomorrow morning’s sprint race 1.
On the side of the absentees, Gianluca Petecof at Campos Racing is replaced this weekend by Matteo Nannini, an F3 driver who also raced this year in F2 with HWA Racelab.
“I am very happy about the opportunity that Campos Racing has given me,” Nannini said. “I had a special friendship with Adrian Campos. He would have loved for me to race with his team and this weekend, it will become a reality.”
Another absentee, but this time in the qualifying session, Roy Nissany was unable to take part in the session due to a significant crash in the free practice this Friday morning.
