In pictures: Mercedes tests 18-inch Pirelli tires at Imola
The Finnish driver tried out the new tire format, due to come into force in 2022. A first glimpse of what the 2022 Formula 1 cars will be like.

In 2022, Formula 1 will go through a major revolution. It will focus, as we know, on aerodynamics, supposed to enable single-seaters to follow each other without being afraid of losing downforce.
This aero revolution will be accompanied by a brand new set of wheels supplied by Pirelli. The exclusive supplier of F1 has been working on this project for several seasons now and has planned a busy schedule this season to test its new tires with the new rims with several teams. Earlier this week, preparations were taking place with Mercedes at the Imola circuit.
After Lewis Hamilton’s 130 laps on Tuesday, it was Valtteri Bottas who completed 106 laps with the future tires on Wednesday. These tests were carried out with the W10 from the 2019 season.
The staff of Pirelli and Mercedes were able to enjoy sunny weather, contrasting with the rainy race on Sunday.
The next tests scheduled by Pirelli will take place on May 11th and 12th at the Barcelona circuit with Red Bull, Alpine, and Alfa Romeo.
