In the midst of the Formula 1 2021 car presentation period, Ferrari also shook up the Endurance world by announcing its arrival in the WEC as a factory team by 2023.

Charles Leclerc tempted by Le Mans

During the announcement, which surprised as much as it rekindled flames among endurance fans, Charles Leclerc confirmed his love for Le Mans. “I have always been a fan of Le Mans, and if the opportunity arises, I will be happy to join the team. I am currently focused on F1, but why not!”

On his side, Carlos Sainz confirmed that the project was interesting, but Leclerc’s new teammate remained more elusive.

« I think it’s great that a brand like Ferrari wants to come back to Le Mans. I will be their first supporter, their biggest fan. Currently, my main goal is the Scuderia Ferrari in F1, and I think I have a lot of work to do with them. Other projects are not my concern, but I will keep a close eye on them.

Other Ferrari drivers in F1 have already raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

If Ferrari’s history is mostly linked to Formula 1, the Prancing Horse firm also has a history at Le Mans, with 9 overall victories between 1949 and 1965. Ferrari was still present in recent years but as a private team in the GT cars category.

Le Mans and F1, these are also these bridges with many F1 drivers who came to shine in the double clock tower. The list is not exhaustive, quite the contrary, we can mention Nigel Mansell, Jean Alesi, or Giancarlo Fisichella… three drivers who passed through Ferrari in F1 before arriving at Le Mans at the end of their careers.

Not forgetting Fernando Alonso, double winner with Toyota in 2018 and 2019.

Motivated by the triple crown?

He is the only one to have achieved this feat, his name is Hill… Graham Hill. The British driver has indeed managed to win the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 Miles, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Currently, the only driver to have openly expressed the desire to win this honorary title is Fernando Alonso. Although he has already won the Monaco Grand Prix in F1, as well as the 24-hour race, he still has to leave his mark on the famous American race.

So, is Charles Leclerc tempted by this challenge? If he is in a good position to win the Monaco Grand Prix one day, it is not certain that he will be on the grid for the Indianapolis 500 one day. The Monegasque driver may soon be influenced by Romain Grosjean, who is currently discovering the Indycar championship.
