Is this the first sign of a return to normalcy? In any case, we can be pleased with the announcement made today by the Monegasque government that the work will start next Monday to prepare the Principality in its race configuration, something they were unable to do in 2020.

The competition schedule this year is even more packed as there will not be two but three races organized: in addition to the famous F1 Grand Prix, there will also be its historic version as well as the Formula E ePrix. This is the first time these last two events will occur in the same year since usually, they alternate. That is why work begins two weeks earlier than in previous years, as seven weeks are required before the first event, which is set for April 23 in the case of the historic Grand Prix.

The icing on the cake is that it is clearly stated that the stands will be part of the planned work: « In addition to the annual paving campaigns, preparatory work for the installation of infrastructure necessary for safety, development, television coverage, public reception, advertising, as well as dedicated access and public pathways will begin on February 22, 2021, with the removal of urban furniture carried out by the Urban Development Directorate (DAU). »

With almost three months to wait before the event takes place, the pandemic can obviously still disrupt the organizers’ plans. But they are at least giving themselves the opportunity to bring in spectators. It should be noted, however, that this urban setting is so complex that the stands are an integral part of the security installations, as it was never considered that the Jewel of the championship could be held behind closed doors.
