It is an understatement to say that a miracle occurred in the Bahrain desert: Romain Grosjean emerged on his own two feet from his car in flames and split in two! It’s been decades since we’ve seen a Formula 1 car on fire. The reason? The Frenchman’s Haas was hurled into the barrier after a collision with Daniil Kvyat’s AlphaTauri at the exit of the second turn, right at the start. Under the impact from a car moving at 221 km/h, measured at an incredible 53G, his car disintegrated into two parts, with the fuel tank full.

Romain Grosjean was then able to extricate himself from his burning car despite being in a very precarious position. In the process, he lost a shoe and burned his hands on the glowing hot rail. The initial medical report from the team was reassuring, mentioning only minor burns on his hands and ankles, and possibly a few broken ribs.

We can say that all protective measures (fireproof suits, helmet, HANS, and halo) perfectly did their job, as well as the FIA protocols, starting with the fact that the medical car was able to arrive on the scene within seconds. It is also believed that if the halo had not been implemented, we might have witnessed another tragedy on an F1 circuit, just one year after the Spa-Francorchamps incident that cost Anthoine Hubert his life.
