George Russell penalized on the starting grid in turn
Under investigation by the stewards, the Williams driver was penalized for not respecting the yellow flags.

After the rain on the track during the Turkish Grand Prix qualifying sessions, a flurry of penalties hit the drivers this Saturday evening. Several investigations took place, and both McLaren drivers were penalized. As mentioned a few hours ago on our site, following his investigation, Russell was also penalized for not respecting yellow flags.
After listening to the British driver’s justifications and analyzing the telemetry and videos, the stewards found him guilty of violating Article 2.5.5.1 b) of Appendix H of the International Sporting Code and Article 7.2 of the race director’s notes regarding the yellow flags waved during the qualifying session.
« Car 63 (George Russell) approached turn 2, which was under double yellow flags for car 26 (Daniel Kvyat), which was off track outside the turn. While car 63 attempted to slow down when approaching the double yellow flags, in the stewards’ opinion, it slowed down insufficiently and did not have full control of the car as it approached and then passed car 26. This lack of total control clearly breaches the regulations. The driver also set a significant lap time on this lap, which in itself breaches the requirements outlined in the race director’s notes. »
After qualifying 18th, the Williams driver will start last after receiving a 5-place penalty, which adds to the penalties related to mechanical component changes, and 3 points on his license. This penalty brings the total points deducted from Russell to 6 over a 12-month period.
