A bad Saturday for McLaren! After Carlos Sainz’s penalty for the Turkish Grand Prix for impeding Sergio Perez during the qualifying session, it’s now his teammate Lando Norris’s turn to be penalized on the starting grid.

As previously stated on Motors Inside, the British driver was summoned by the stewards of the Turkish Grand Prix for not respecting Article 2.5.5.1 b) of Appendix H of the International Sporting Code and Article 7.2 of the race director’s notes related to the yellow flags waved during the qualifying session.

The stewards heard from the driver of car 4 (Lando Norris), the team representative, and examined video evidence, radio, telemetry, and marshalling system. Car 4 approached turn 8, which had double waved yellow flags for car 6 (Nicolas Latifi). Telemetry shows that car 4 slowed down in the sector and resumed speed after the incident. Car 4 then asked its team if it should abort the lap, but was told to stay on track due to rapidly changing track conditions. Car 4 completed the lap, which turned out to be his fastest lap of Q1. Although the stewards acknowledge that car 4 was not attempting to set a fast lap time, due to the changing track conditions, it nevertheless did and thus breached the mentioned regulations.

The McLaren driver who qualified 11th was penalized 5 grid positions and lost 3 points on his license. He will start this Sunday from 16th place. This allows Vettel to gain one place and Leclerc, Gasly, and Magnussen to gain two places following his teammate’s penalty.

The 2 McLaren drivers will start from the 15th and 16th positions for a race that promises to be exciting!
