The FIA warns drivers about on-track behavior in Sochi

For the Russian Grand Prix, the FIA wants a weekend without incidents. This is why the race management made a point to clarify the prohibition of certain practices, particularly during the qualifications.

Unlike Mugello, where every driving error or track limit overstep is automatically penalized, Sochi is a new-generation circuit allowing track limit breaches without consequences. The FIA reminded drivers of the need to respect these limits under penalty of grid penalties.

The passage through turn number 2 is crucial for preparing the first braking point on the next corner. The drivers are tempted to go wide on the limits of this turn, which is forbidden. In case of going off track, the qualifying time will not be counted, and the driver risks penalties on the grid in the event of repeated offenses.

To avoid similar scenarios to the 2019 Italian GP qualifying where Q3 experienced a pile-up of cars before the starting line, the FIA has completely banned any unnecessary slow-speed driving. In Sochi, drivers are tempted to slow down as much as possible in turns 12 and 13 to prepare for the fast lap, which poses a great danger and risks creating incidents on the track. Race management has warned the drivers and indicated that the stewards will be scrutinizing the maximum lap time.
