It’s a hard blow in the automotive world; the Geneva International Motor Show, or GIMS (Geneva International Motor Show), announced in a statement that the 2021 show will not take place. It was already canceled in 2020 by Swiss authorities due to the coronavirus.

As a reminder, the first edition of this legendary show dates back to 1905. The Geneva Motor Show is considered, along with the Detroit Auto Show, the Paris Motor Show, and the Frankfurt Motor Show, as one of the largest gatherings in the world in this field. Geneva is the luxury show, where the most prestigious manufacturers are present every year to showcase their new cars in front of 600,000 spectators.

The organizers of the show had surveyed the manufacturers who were reluctant to participate in the 2021 show due to the current crisis: « following a survey, the majority of exhibitors indicated that they would probably not participate in a 2021 edition and preferred a next edition in 2022. The automotive sector is currently facing a major crisis, and exhibitors need time before they can invest in a show. »

Moreover, the current health situation does not allow us to affirm that an event of this size could be held under good sanitary conditions.

The lack of interest from automotive manufacturers in the 2021 show, combined with direct losses of over 11 million Swiss francs (about 10 million euros) due to the cancellation of the 2020 show, led the organizers to also cancel the 2021 event.
