Pirelli had announced this morning the different types of tires allocated to the teams for the Monaco Grand Prix, and this news seemed to some to be very optimistic. Indeed, the FIA has made the decision to postpone the Grand Prix that were to take place during the month of May.

« Formula 1, the FIA, and the three promoters made these decisions to preserve the health and safety of staff, participants, and the public, which remains our primary concern. » « Formula 1 and the FIA continue to work closely with the concerned promoters and local authorities to monitor the situation and take the necessary time to consider possible alternative dates for each Grand Prix later in the year, if the situation improves. » Announced the FIA in an official statement.

With this announcement, the FIA is allowing time to see how the situation due to the COVID-19 epidemic will evolve. This announcement likely echoes the mishap in Melbourne; this time, the International Automobile Federation has taken the lead. The season is currently missing 7 Grand Prix events (Australia, Bahrain, Vietnam, China, Netherlands, Spain, and Monaco). The first Grand Prix of the season would, for now, be in Baku, Azerbaijan, on June 7. However, it is essential to keep in mind that the holding of this Grand Prix will depend on an improvement in the global health situation.

The puzzle now for the FIA and the organizers will be to determine if it will be possible to ensure the holding of these seven postponed Grand Prix. Can Monaco and Melbourne, which are urban circuits, reinstate the necessary infrastructure for the race cars to come to their cities? Aside from this scheduling issue, one must also be aware that additional costs will also be a future obstacle to the rescheduling of these Grand Prix.

Later in the afternoon, the Automobile Club de Monaco announced on its Twitter account the cancellation of its 78th National Grand Prix.

The health situation, which cannot be predicted, the lack of visibility on the modalities of the FIA World Championship, the uncertainty of the participation of all teams, the consequences of the measures taken by various governments, the lockdown, the cross-border difficulties to access the Principality of Monaco, the fear that companies, against their will, may not be able to handle the assembly of installations, the availability of employees, volunteers (more than 1500), necessary for its conduct, make the situation no longer objectively manageable.

Consequently, in light of this serious situation, it is with the greatest sadness that the Automobile Club de Monaco’s Executive Committee has made the decision to cancel the 12th Monaco Historic Grand Prix (May 8-10 /f1/actualite/23978-la-treve-estivale-avancee-et-etendue.html) and the 78th Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix of the FIA World Championship (May 21-24 /f1/actualite/23978-la-treve-estivale-avancee-et-etendue.html). »

An unmissable F1 event, it will be the first time since 1955 that the Monaco Grand Prix will be absent from the calendar.

The teams will now enter into a 21-day break period, during which employees from the different teams will put aside their work on the Formula 1 season.
