After being ousted from the Red Bull Junior Team in 2016 due to a disappointing Formula 3 season where the Brazilian finished only in 11th place, Dr. Helmut Marko decided to give the Belo Horizonte native a second chance despite a somewhat disappointing 2019 F2 season. Although he was expected to be the strong favorite for the title, Camara could not do better than 4th in the championship, with his best results being a victory in Austria and another in Abu Dhabi.

He will thus join Sebastian Buemi as a reserve driver for both teams of the Red Bull brand, with the hope of possibly securing a seat in 2021 at AlphaTauri if one of the two drivers from the Faenza-based team does not meet expectations.

Sergio Sette Camara seems delighted to rejoin the Red Bull fold: « I am extremely happy to join the Red Bull family as an official Test & Reserve driver for the 2020 Formula 1 season alongside Sébastien [editor’s note: Buemi]. I have been watching F1 since the age of five and I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with Scuderia AlphaTauri and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. »

Sergio Sette Camara is the fourth driver in a series of drivers who, after being ousted from the Red Bull fold, have been given a second chance. Brendon Hartley, Daniil Kvyat, and Alexander Albon all suffered the same fate as the Brazilian. The one faring the best so far is Albon, as he not only joined Toro Rosso in 2019 but was also promoted to the main team by mid-season.
